HD’s Jack Heneghan acted as Quantity Surveyor for a major industrial development for John
Dewar and Sons at their distillery near Spey Bay, one of Scotland’s most iconic whisky-producing
locations.
Description
The development comprised a new bunded tank farm (141m2), effluent tank, cooling tower base, newdraff hopper, extension of the existing stillhouse, tun rooms and associated external works,collectively representing a significant capital investment in expanding the distillery’s productioncapacity. The project was delivered via SBCC Traditional procurement, requiring HD to providedetailed Bills of Quantities, pre-contract cost management, tender analysis and post-contract costreporting. The industrial nature of the works demanded specialist knowledge of distillery infrastructureand food and drink sector construction requirements.
Delivery was achieved in a remote location 12 miles from Spey Bay, requiring careful logistical planningfor materials, plant and specialist subcontractors. Programme management was critical given theclient’s requirement to maintain continuous distillery operations throughout the construction works.This project demonstrates HD’s versatility in the industrial and food & drink sector, applying coreQuantity Surveying disciplines to specialist infrastructure projects requiring sector-specificknowledge and experience of working in operationally sensitive production environments.
